After a long career working for the City of Los Angeles, Sloss took the risk of starting her own consulting firm. Her and her business partner Michael Corrin worked together for the City of Los Angeles for almost 60 combined years. When COVID-19 hit, she used their expertise to pivot their consulting business to add an e-commerce element.

Sloss considers her company Strategic Partnerships International (SCA) to be a community connector and resource to small and disadvantaged businesses. “We are dedicated to assisting women and minority business owners,” says Sloss. They also mentor small businesses, helping with strategies for working with prime contractors, and assisting with obtaining their certifications if they are not currently certified.

One of SCA Strategic’s larger contracts was with an airport—the firm helps small businesses sell their products at the airport and supports the airport with their hiring practices. Due to the impact of COVID-19 on the aviation industry, SCA Strategic’s contact with the airport was terminated. Fortunately, SCA Strategic was able to maintain its staff and did not have to let anyone go. This was largely due to support from TMC Community Capital’s Small Business Big Heart Grant Program. “TMC Community Capital has been so supportive to our small business,” Sloss says, “assisting us as we faced the financial impacts of COVID-19.”

In the face of drastic economic uncertainty, and with the help of TMC Community Capital, Sloss has gracefully pivoted her consulting business, adding a personal care e-commerce client to her strategic portfolio. 

She advises other business owners to use this time to think about what they love to do and how they can do it in a new and different way. “Be open to new partnerships and collaborations,” Sloss says. “They can help you bring your new entrepreneurial vision to fruition.”
