In Her Own Words: Oakland florist Ariana Marbley uses a local grant to grow her business
As our communities reopen, women across America see their lives becoming more complicated as they juggle responsibilities at home and at work (which is often still at home), caring for coworkers, customers and family. Ariana Marbley’s floral business counted on large events until Covid-19 wiped them out.
"Inspired by my grandfather’s love of gardening, I decided to open my florist shop, Esscents of Flowers, in Oakland, California in 2016. I am a proud East Oakland native and I am proud to own a business in a community that is rich in culture and political awareness.
Prior to the pandemic, my main business involved providing floral arrangements for other large events, including weddings. With gatherings no longer occurring, that portion of my revenue was completely shut down and I began looking for resources that could help pivot my business and offer financial relief.
I learned about the TMC Community Capital’s Small Business Big Heart Grant Program through Uptima Boot Camp, who helped me with the application process. My business was selected in the grant program’s lottery and I was awarded a $2,000 grant. I was able to receive my grant within 3 business days and began putting the funds to use. My flower arrangements are used to help celebrate life’s joyous moments, big and small. This grant will help me continue to provide flowers for life’s events, even if our events look different right now.
I plan on using the grant funds to expand our home delivery service in response to COVID. These funds will allow me to purchase inventory for these deliveries. We created a yellow rose campaign for the Black Lives Matter movement that boosted our sales. We are continuing to do floral designs for weddings and event programs as well. We have partnered with local coffee shops and bakeries to expand our home delivery service.
The publicity from TMC Community Capital’s grant program will allow me to reach new clients and expand my business. My future strategy includes partnering with West Oakland women small business owners to create marketing campaigns that reach a large audience. I am excited to continue to provide floral arrangements that encourage community members to celebrate all successes, big or small."
