TMC Community Capital More Than Triples Rural Small Business Lending in 2026

Small businesses are essential to California's economy, yet many of the entrepreneurs behind them still face significant barriers to financing. This is especially true in rural communities. In 2026, TMC Community Capital is making measurable progress in closing that gap, more than tripling the number of rural entrepreneurs funded compared to the previous year.

The nonprofit Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI) has financed over a hundred rural small businesses this year, expanding its reach into communities where access to affordable capital can determine whether a business stays open, grows, or misses its next opportunity. From agricultural suppliers to neighborhood storefronts, these investments are supporting businesses that provide jobs, services, and economic activity close to home.

One of those entrepreneurs, Rosa Marquez Perez, owner of Rosita's Beauty Salon in Orland, California has built a neighborhood business offering haircuts, highlights, manicures, pedicures, and beauty products, providing local residents with convenient access to everyday personal care services. She only needed a small amount to finance additional equipment to offer other services, however, she couldn’t find an affordable source of capital. Connected to TMC Community Capital, her financing problems were over. She started with a $5,000 loan, and after a history of on time payments, she was able to refinance for a larger amount. Rosa’s hard work has paid off, as her salon continues to grow.

TMC Community Capital’s expansion has been made possible in part by an investment from the Wells Fargo Foundation, sharing the belief that small businesses are the economic fabric of our communities. TMC Community Capital has a lending model that considers the realities of small business ownership, including entrepreneurs with limited credit histories, cash-based operations, or financial circumstances that may not fit traditional underwriting standards. Leveraging alternative data, TMC Community Capital can fund a complete application as fast as eight business days.

As TMC Community Capital continues expanding its reach, its focus remains on building long-term relationships with entrepreneurs and the organizations that support them. The goal is not simply to fund more businesses, but to ensure that rural communities have a stronger financial foundation for the years ahead.
